Whitsunday Islands given new identity
THE identity of the individual Whitsunday Islands will be ensured through a proposed official naming project being undertaken by the Department of Environment and Resource Management.
At present, several islands in the Whitsundays are not individually named.
The department is proposing to discontinue the use of ‘Whitsundays’ as an official locality name and replace it by creating new localities of Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Hook Island, Long Island, the Molle Isles, the Whitsunday Isles, Brampton Island, Keswick Island, the Lindeman Isles and St Bees Island.
Regional Manager for Planning and Assessment Ian Gordon said the proposal to remove ‘Whitsundays’ as a locality name does not mean that the group of islands or the region will no longer be known as the Whitsundays.
“The common usage of ‘Whitsundays’ and ‘Whitsunday Islands’ for the area will continue,” Mr Gordon said.
“The name ‘Whitsundays’ has a very high profile and a strong national and international identity as one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations, attracting visitors from all over the world.”
Mr Gordon said locality names are the official place names used for addressing and emergency services. Whereas tourism names are not official place names and can only be used for tourism purposes.
“The tourism sector will be able to continue using the general description of ‘Whitsundays’ and ‘Whitsunday Islands’ for advertising purposes.
"This place name project is not seeking to review the appropriate use of names for tourism purposes.”

New $150,000 tourism campaign to lure Australians to the Whitsundays.
A NEW $150,000 tourism campaign is designed to lure Australians to the Whitsundays.
The Tourism Queensland led national campaign will include fantastic deals such as stay three nights at five star resorts and pay for two from as little as $269.
The ‘Escape to the Whitsundays’ campaign is on sale nationally from March 1 to April 18.
Tourism Whitsundays chief executive officer Peter O’Reilly said he was excited to see the launch of another national campaign promoting the Whitsundays.
“We have just finished a campaign with Jetstar Holidays in the southern states, and this campaign will keep the Whitsundays at the top of traveller’s minds,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“The interest in the Whitsundays following the success of the Best Job in the World has remained high, and we have a number of campaigns planned this year to turn that interest into bookings.
“The Escape to the Whitsundays campaign will offer a good mix of 3 to 5 star island and mainland accommodation, tours and sailing activities, really showcasing what our region has to offer.”
Whitsunday MP Jan Jarratt said the campaign would encourage people to visit the Whitsundays for their mid-year getaway.
“This campaign is all about increasing the visibility and presence of the Whitsundays as the perfect Australian holiday destination, and in turn aims to encourage people to want to visit,” she said.
“Best of all, thanks to Tourism Queensland’s considerable market buying power, the campaign was free for local operators to participate in.”
